Decay of roof shingles, sheathing, and/or siding

Poor attic ventilation or age
Missing, cracked or curled shingles

Your shingles have reached the end of their useful life adn are about to fail
Dark, "dirty-looking" areas on your roof

Environmental pollutants; vegetation, fungus or algae; and/or loss of granules due to the age of your shingles
Excessive energy costs

Probable cause: Insufficient attic ventilation. In warm weather, inadequate ventilation traps hot air in your attic causing air conditioning to work harder and leaving your home's interior hotter. In summer and winter, insufficient attic ventilation may cause moisture in the attic to become trapped and condense. Then water can drip down onto your insulation, reducing its effectiveness – and result in higher heating and cooling costs
